Apple developers can now enable ‘Family Sharing’ for in-app purchases

Apple announced on Friday that iOS developers can now enable ‘Family Sharing’ for auto-renewable subscriptions and non-consumable in-app purchases. The company first announced the feature back in June.

By enabling Family Sharing, Apple developers will have a chance to let app users to share their purchases with up to five family members. However, users who purchase a consumable item like game coins will not be able to share them with a family member. The Family Sharing is only for auto-renewable subscriptions and non-consumable in-app purchases.

“Family Sharing provides a streamlined, convenient user experience and can help you attract subscribers, encourage paid subscriptions, increase user engagement, and improve retention.” Apple said in a statement.

Please note that once you turn on Family Sharing for in-app purchases in App Store Connect, you cannot turn it off, Apple says.

In order to turn Family Sharing on:

  • From My Apps, select your app.
  • In the sidebar under In-App Purchases, click Manage.
  • Select your in-app purchase from the list.
  • Scroll down to the Family Sharing section.
  • Click Turn On.
