Animoca Brands partners with Bored Ape Yacht Club to develop a blockchain NFT game

Animoca Brands, one of the leading companies in the Asia Pacific region in the field of digital entertainment, blockchain and gamification, announced that it has partnered with Bored Ape Yacht Club to develop and publish a blockchain game utilizing BAYC’s hugely popular Bored Ape non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The new game is expected to release in the second quarter of 2022, and will feature play-to-earn mechanics.

Animoca Brands operates as a digital entertainment, blockchain and gamification company that drives digital property rights through NFTs and gaming to help create the open metaverse. The Hong Kong-based company raised $65 million at a valuation of $2.2 billion in October.

The company also has more than 100 investments in the NFT focus. Companies that Animoca Brands has invested in include Concept Art House, OpenSea, Dapper Labs, Bitski, Star Atlas and Axie Infinity.

Yat Siu, co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, said: “NFTs have emerged as a store of culture. There are very few icons that are able to represent the surging world of NFTs as powerfully as Bored Ape Yacht Club, which is why we, as a group and in aggregate, hold a significant number of them. We are incredibly excited and proud to collaborate on a game for this cultural milestone.”

Bored Ape Yacht Club, on the other hand, is a collection containing 10,000  Bored Ape NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain, which has become entrenched in popular culture. Each Bored Ape NFT created by Yuga Labs offers its owners a variety of benefits, from product discounts to events. Originally known as BAYC, the collection launched in April 2021 and has grown to include the Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) spinoff collections.

“We’re excited to work with Animoca Brands to grow the BAYC universe and expand the utility and benefits offered to all Bored Ape NFT holders,” said a Yuga Labs spokesperson. “Animoca Brands is a trailblazer in the blockchain gaming space with a proven track record of delivering. We can’t wait to share more with the community about what we’re building.”
