US Senators Declare TikTok a National Security Threat

Members of the US Congress said that TikTok, one of the fastest growing social media platforms, is a national security threat for the United States. 

The Republican and Democrat members of the US Congress argued that TikTok, the video sharing platform, should be reviewed by Intelligence Community. The members of the congress also said that China’s connections with the Chinese application should be investigated.

They want to see if China can track US citizens. According to data from Sensor Tower, a social media research company, TikTok has 100 million users in the USA.
Republican Senator Tom Cotton and Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer think that countries that want to influence US citizens can reach out to users through such applications, and they can change users’ minds with false news and propaganda.

By US Senators, a letter was sent to Joseph McGuire, Deputy Director of the US National Intelligence.

“With over 110 million downloads in the U.S. alone, TikTok is a potential counterintelligence threat we cannot ignore… Given these concerns, we ask that the Intelligence Community conduct an assessment of the national security risks posed by TikTok and other China-based content platforms operating in the U.S. and brief Congress on these findings,”

TikTok made a statement about the subject and announced that all personal data of US users are stored on US-based servers and backed up on Singapore-based servers.
